Grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi) is a hybrid between an orange and a pomelo that is native to the Caribbean island of Barbados. There are many varieties with different skin and pulp colours, the best known to consumers being pink and red grapefruits as they have the sweetest taste.

At Lush, we use fresh pink and white grapefruit depending on our product inventors’ wishes but also availability on the food market. The essential oil is made from white grapefruit only; a variety with a yellow pulp that is a favourite in the juice and perfume industries.

Grapefruit’s sweet and citrusy aroma is about 90% limonene, an aromatic antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. This is why the oil is thought to have skin-firming properties. It really is a terrific fruit!



Finding a good, direct source for grapefruit oil has been a challenge over the years as the white grapefruit variety is often overshadowed by food industry trends, which can influence the quality and availability of the oil. A fragrant floral wonder! Geranium will lift your mood and treat your skin.

Pelargonium graveolens, a leafy shrub native to South Africa, isn’t the popular window-box geranium but is part of the same big family of Geraniaceae. It is commonly called rose geranium or sweet-scented geranium in reference to the strong floral scent diffused by its incised and velvety, fragrant leaves.

Rose and geranium oils have very similar aromatic profiles and some chemical constituents in common depending on the variety. This is why they are often used together, enhancing and supporting each other's scent.

Lush purchases geranium oil from Egypt and Kenya. The type grown in Kenya is of a premium quality known as Bourbon, and it is grown sustainably, without the use of chemicals. Jojoba (pronounced ho-ho-ba) is a good friend to your skin and scalp!

Jojoba oil is obtained by pressing the seeds of the jojoba shrub (Simmondsia chinensis). The plant is native to the Sonoran Desert in Northwest Mexico and Southwest USA, and its deep root system and leathery leaves make it well suited to droughts and intense heat. It can also be cultivated in areas suffering from soil erosion to help improve soil quality.
