Ingredient
Roman Chamomile Oil
Anthemis nobilis
Benefits
Natural
Roman chamomile is a small but mighty flower. With an apple-like fragrance, the oil is renowned for its calming effects on the body and mind.
Native to western Europe, and rarely reaching more than nine inches tall, the Roman chamomile plant creates a fine, ferny carpet when planted, making it a popular ground cover in gardens. The yellow and white daisy-like flowers are used to obtain the essential oil, which, surprisingly, turns a pale blue colour during distillation.
What are the benefits of Roman chamomile oil?
In the 10th century, chamomile was recorded as one of the nine sacred herbs of the Lacnunga, an ancient Anglo-Saxon herbal manuscript. The flower has been used throughout history to treat and relieve wounds, burns, and sunburns. Its antibacterial properties make it deodorising and cleansing, so it is perfect for use in soaps and oral hygiene products.
- Soothes skin irritation
- Antifungal
- Deeply relaxing
Chamomile is also often used in shampoos and hair treatments as its toning effect helps to bring out subtle golden tones in hair, giving blonde hair a brighter appearance.
In aromatherapy, chamomile has long been popular for its calming properties on the mind. It is thought to relieve anxiety and tension and promote restful sleep.
Where do we source our Roman chamomile oil?
This flower’s name is a bit of a misnomer, since it doesn’t come to us from Rome at all. We source it from a producer in the UK*, who are a fourth-generation family business.
*With several manufacturing sites across the globe, this information may vary depending on where your Lush products were made.
