Oryza sativa Syrup
Benefits
Natural
Deliciously sweet and lightly hydrating, rice syrup is an all too rare but precious ingredient in cosmetics.
Where do we get it?
Lush UK purchases rice syrup from an organic manufacturer in Belgium. This family-run business has over a hundred years of experience in the food industry. They became experts and even pioneers in cereals' natural and organic hydrolysis over the past thirty years. They believe that processed foods don’t have to be unhealthy and that their eco-friendly philosophy can be applied to all areas of their business.
To create the syrup, they first mill the organic rice into flour. The flour is then mixed with water and (GMO-free) enzymes that will separate the starch’s molecules. This process, known as hydrolysis, is what helps extract the sugar from the rice. The mixture then passes through filtration and evaporation until a sweet syrup is obtained.
With seven manufacturing sites across the globe, this information may vary depending on where your Lush products were made.
What is it good for?
In the food industry, rice syrup can be used as a sweetener - it is often added to rice milk for that purpose. In Lush cosmetics, it helps give our products a pleasant-to-apply, silky texture. It is rich in minerals such as magnesium and potassium and is composed mainly of two sugars, maltose and glucose, known for their humectant properties. Humectants are great for skin and hair care as they help retain moisture and therefore hydrate the skin.
