Ingredient

Seabuckthorn Oil

Hippophae rhamnoides

Benefits

Natural

Pressed from the little orange fruits of a thorny bush, this oil bursts with nutrients that benefit the skin.

Where do we get it?

Lush UK purchases seabuckthorn oil from Poland through a supplier. Although the oil is often obtained from the fruit's seeds, this one is pressed from the pulp, which also contains oils! Read about seabuckthorn’s night harvests directly from our supplier.

With seven manufacturing sites across the globe, this information may vary depending on where your Lush products were made.

What are the benefits of seabuckthorn oil for the skin?

Who would have thought that such an ordinary shrub would have such extraordinary benefits? The whole plant contains interesting properties for human health, but the pulp of the fruit is particularly rich. It has a very sour taste but, luckily for us, this oil is to be applied to the skin!

Here are the oil's main interesting components:

  • Proteins and amino acids help strengthen the skin barrier
  • Reviving vitamin C enhances the skin’s radiance.
  • Carotenoids and vitamin E are antioxidants and therefore are said to keep the skin firm and healthy.
  • Fatty acids such as oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids moisturise with lightness.

Down by the cold seaside

Usually, when talking about species native to coastal regions of Europe and Asia, we think of the warm sun of the Mediterranean Sea or the Pacific Ocean. But sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) loves cold to temperate climates and thrives around the Baltic and North Seas.

It also likes islands, hills, and mountain river beds and has a deep root system that helps improve soil quality and fight erosion. The plant has been used in traditional medicine in the countries where it grows, such as Tibet, China, and Russia; particularly for its anti-inflammatory properties.
