Lots of color often means lots of good things—and that's true with roselle, a bright red hibiscus flower packed with antioxidants.

Where do we get this ingredient?

To create this extract, dried hibiscus flowers are blended with propylene glycol and water. Propylene glycol is purchased from a Belgian company that prides itself on creating biodegradable chemicals from natural oils. Their business strategy includes protecting natural resources and biodiversity, the welfare of their employees and inclusivity.

When it comes to the flowers, Lush purchases them from multiple suppliers who source them from different countries around the world depending on season and availability. Each supplier must comply with Lush's buying policy which encourages growers to move away from the use of hazardous pesticides. Periodic, case-by-case spot checks are also performed to detect pesticide residues on the ingredients entering our factories.

What are the benefits of hibiscus flower extract?

Hibiscus sabdariffa is an annual herb native to the tropics. Its flowers contain antioxidant compounds such as anthocyanosides, known to support skin elasticity. They are also said to be soothing and astringent.

The flowers’ red-pink pigments bring colour to propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is an excellent carrier that, among other benefits, helps different ingredients mix better and reach the skin. Read more about propylene glycol’s role in our formula here.
