Chamomile Blue Oil

Ingredient

Chamomile Blue Oil

Matricaria chamomilla

Benefits

Natural

This bright blue chamomile oil shares similar properties with the iconic lavender and is often used alongside it.

Where do we get it?

We source our chamomile blue directly from a specialised producer in Hungary, who has been growing and producing the oil for nearly 80 years. Chamomile harvest takes place in May, and the oil is produced through a traditional steam distillation method, drawing on knowledge refined over decades while using a biomass boiler to minimise CO2 emissions. Alongside working with a trusted network of farmers, our supplier continues to move toward full vertical integration with their own farming operations, managing every stage from seed selection to planting, harvesting, and distillation.

One of the most fascinating features of chamomile blue is its colour. Although the fresh chamomile flowers are white, the essential oil is a deep, vivid blue. This transformation happens during steam distillation, when chamazulene is formed through a natural chemical reaction. Hungarian chamomile is world-famous for its particularly high chamazulene content, which is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties.

What are the benefits of chamomile blue oil?

  • Soothes the skin.
  • Gently cleanses the skin and scalp.
  • Believed to promote calm and restful sleep when inhaled.

Unique stories

Native to Europe, Matricaria chamomilla (also known as German chamomile or Matricaria recutita) blooms fragrant, daisy-like flowers throughout the summer. Originally white in colour, the flowers yield a blue pigment when distilled into an essential oil. This is due to chamazulene, an anti-inflammatory compound that forms during steam distillation.
