Ingredient

Caster Sugar

Benefits

Natural

Caster sugar is a fine-grained sugar that gently exfoliates the skin and makes it deliciously soft.

Where does Lush purchase caster sugar?

Lush UK* purchases this sweet ingredient from British Sugar, a producer and processor that primarily works with sugar beet growers in the United Kingdom. These growers are certified by Red Tractor, which ensures:

  • Traceability back to farm level.
  • Strict regulations around the use of pesticides.
  • Minimal impact of the farms on the local wildlife and the environment.

British Sugar produces enough of its own electricity to power its four sites and more than 170,000 homes. Lastly, one more fact: the UK-grown beets are 96% rain-fed!

*With seven manufacturing sites across the globe, this information may vary depending on where your Lush products were made.

What are the benefits of caster sugar for the skin?

- Sugar is a natural and biodegradable exfoliant (take that, plastic microbeads!).

- Exfoliants like sugar buff away dead skin cells and make the skin really soft.

- A natural humectant, caster sugar also draws moisture to the skin.

How is this sugar made?

Sugar beets are sown in the spring and harvested in the autumn and winter. Once collected, they are sent to a processing plant. There, they are washed, cut into thin strips and soaked in hot water and lemon juice to extract the sugar. The resulting syrup is then filtered and heated until sugar crystals form.
